Committee support for AGU Goals and Objectives

Here is a list of the AGU Goals and Objectives from the Strategic Plan (see the end of http://www.agu.org/about/strategic_plan.shtml) that are supported directly or indirectly by the work of the SPA-EPO committee. Objectives in red are directly impacted by the work of the committee and its members. Objectives in Green are or can be supported by the committee.

Goal: Scientific Leadership and Collaboration

Objective 4. Develop an interface between our science and that of other disciplines — including engineering, public policy, global governance — to best inform decision making.

Goal: Science and Society

Objective 1. Expand training, recognition and reward of AGU scientists for excellence in communicating science to nonscience audiences.

Objective 3. Increase awareness of the importance of Earth and space science issues for nonscience audiences.

Objective 4. Increase effectiveness and recognition of AGU among decision makers as an authoritative source of integrated, interdisciplinary Earth and space science information.

Objective 5. Increase awareness of the reality and consequences of global climate change among scientists and the public.

Objective 6. Increase the role of Earth sciences in informing policy and mitigating impacts of natural disasters.

Goal: Talent Pool

Objective 1. Increase our understanding of the real barriers to gender and ethnic diversity and involvement within AGU and within Earth and space science.

Objective 2. Enhance engagement and involvement in AGU of students and early career scientists.

Objective 3 Identify career alternatives within Earth and space science and subsequent career paths available.

Objective 4. Enhance mutual support and networking opportunities for students and early career scientists.

Objective 5. Increase participation of underrepresented populations.
